Bucketfull of Brains was a proper fanzine, one of the very finest, starting back in 1979 under the editorship of Nigel Cross, and occupying the same kind of area as Zigzag at its best - i.e. celebrating those bits of contemporary rock untouched by the mainstream media. The first issue had the Soft Boys on the cover, which pretty much established its credentials: Robyn Hitchcock has been a perennial favourite, joined in the early-'80s by the Paisley Underground, REM, the Barracudas and more. What we have here is a tribute to the early days of the publication: the covers of the first ten issues. When I say that issue 10 came out in 1984, you'll get an idea of how sporadic and ramshackle the whole enterprise was. Which makes it even more impressive that the magazine continues to publish. non fiction home |
