The decade or so that preceded the reinvention of mass-market horror by The Exorcist was a lean period for the genre in fiction terms. But there was a chink of light with The Pan Book of Horror Stories, a series that introduced a generation to the tradition via a fine collection of new short stories leavened - in the early days - by some classic oldies. The series petered out in the 1980s, by which time Stephen King, Peter Straub, Ramsay Campbell and the rest had ensured that novels were back in fashion in a big way.
