THE PAN BOOKS OF HORROR STORIES

The decade or so that preceded the reinvention of mass-market horror by The Exorcist was a lean period for the genre in fiction terms. But there was a chink of light with The Pan Book of Horror Stories, a series that introduced a generation to the tradition via a fine collection of new short stories leavened - in the early days - by some classic oldies. The series petered out in the 1980s, by which time Stephen King, Peter Straub, Ramsay Campbell and the rest had ensured that novels were back in fashion in a big way.
In tribute to this once ubiquitous set of books, here’s the cover art, accompanied in each case by a listing of the stories, and featuring also an index of the stories, listed by author.
I'm hugely indebted to Mr Duncan Ball, who very kindly provided me with scans and contents listings for the volumes I had missing - many thanks to him. Due to his contribution, this is now a complete listing of all thirty volumes.
